3D Printing A New Ally for the Liver

3D Printing A New Ally for the Liver 3D Printing A New Ally for the Liver 3D Printing A New Ally for the LiverIn 2012, Dr. Nizar Zein found himself at a Starbucks reading an article on 3D printing for non-medical use. Among other things, he considered the problem with surgery involving livers, whether transplant or tumor resection. One issue for this complicated organ, he says, is that patients sometimes end up with complications due to inadvertently cutting through a major blood vessel or bile duct.He realized 3D printing might bea helpfulassistant. Working as part of a team at the Cleveland Clinic,he and his group havebeen on an odyssey to mix this technology with the medical need.A Closer Look, and FeelAs Zein explains, there are difficulties in coming up with a surgical plan when it comes to the liver. For example, when you turn 2D images into 3D images, you were still looking at these 3D images through a 2D computer screen. You lose the sense of depth, he says. The thinking with 3D printing a liver wasthatit would solve this issue. And it could have the added advantage of tactile functioning. With a replica of the patients liver, the thought was also that you could reassess your landmark and proximity to major blood vessels and bile ducts, says Zein, the Cleveland Clinics chief of hepatology and chairman of global patient services.A human liver during transplantation procedure. ansehen Wikimedia CommonsThey produced the very first patient-phased liver in 2012 and, to his knowledge, it was the first 3D-printed liver ever done.Phase II then came, itsprimary goal to verify that an identical copy could be created for a patients liver. We went through a process for every patient who underwent liver surgery where we resected a portion of the liver, took it out, and prior to surgery, weprepared a 3D printed version of it, explains Zein. They found the results showed it was quite accurate, he says.Improvements vary from the first model being at 75% of an actual liv er model to those today createdat actual scale, to moving to plastic as a material. Among the most impressive improvements is in speed, however. The first model took roughly six weeks to produce. Now? It takes less than 48 hours. But there has also been a change in the transparency of the model. Zein described early ones as a little bit hazy, yellowish in color, while more recent models are almost like looking through glass.Theyve also extended the technology, for surgical purposes, to components. This includes the hilum, which, Zein says, is the most complicated in terms of blood vessels and bile ducts structures. Its printed separately from the liver so it allows for better planning, he says. They have utilized magnets to print the liver and different components separately but, with magnets, they can put them back together depending on what particular component you want to see more carefully. They even developed methods toallow models in sterile packaging to be taken into the operati ng room. The teams data has shown times when surgical plans have been at least somewhat altered when a model was utilized. The hospital has even used a model for guidance for a surgery involving a tumor in the liverafter the patient had been turned down by multiple institutions for surgery, he says.My career has been as a clinical investigator so medical research and investigation is part of my life and its probably the most exciting part of my life.Dr. Nizar Zein, The Cleveland ClinicMy career has been as a clinical investigator so medical research and investigation is part of my life and its probably the most exciting part of my life, says Zein, whose father was an engineer. So Im very proud of what we did. What comes out of it, in the end, Im leid sure, but I have a feeling that there will be a role for these technologies, 3D printing, in complex surgeries.Eric Butterman is an independent writer.Bioengineering is the theme of ASMEs IMECE 2015. Sometimes Your Cover Letters Just Gotta Say WTF

Sometimes Your Cover Letters Just Gotta Say WTFSometimes Your Cover Letters Just Gotta Say WTFSometimes Your Cover Letters Just Gotta Say WTFIf you havent already, youll reach a point in your job search where you think your head will explode if you have to face one more cycle of applying, interviewing, and getting rejected. Thats when you need to remind yourself of the immortal line from the movie Risky Business Sometimes you just gotta say what the f- (thats WTF for all you texters who werent even born when that movie came out in 1983.) Once youve embraced that new attitude, you need to sit down and write a WTF titelblatt letter.A WTF cover letter is unfiltered and honest. It tells it like it is. It bends the rules, skips the formalities, and doesnt fear the consequences. And it feels really, really good to write one. Heres the difference between a standard cover letter and a WTF cover letterSTANDARD Cover LetterDear Ms. JeffersonI am very interested in the Sr. Account Manager oppor tunity with Jefferson and Partners. As you will see on my resume, I have seven years of account management experience with Franklin Brothers. I believe the skills and achievements I attained in that role, especially my record of being the top account manager in 11 of the past 12 months, will make me an asset to your business...WTF Cover LetterDear Ms. JeffersonFor seven years I kept your photo on my dartboard. I was an account manager for your main competitor, Franklin Brothers, and your agency was the enemy. I spent hundreds of hours researching your strategies in order to stay one step ahead. All that effort made me Franklin Brothers top account manager for most of belastung year. Unfortunately, you still beat us badly and Franklin Brothers went under. And now I have all this in-depth knowledge of your company and nowhere to use it. So, how about an interview? Should you actually send a WTF cover letter to an employer? It depends on your personality and your industry. If youre app lying to, say,a law firm or a funeral home you might want to tone it down. In the end, trust your gut. (But dont forget Sometimes you just gotta say )Maybe your impassioned, over-the-top cover letter will stand out so much that the employer cant wait to meet you. Or, maybe itll wind up on their office bulletin board as an object of ridicule. Either way, youll feel better just getting all that off your chest.

Your 4-Step Plan to Getting Promoted This Year - The Muse

Your 4-Step Plan to Getting Promoted This Year - The MuseYour 4-Step Plan to Getting Promoted This Year My client Morgan called me recently with an important question about her career planning. After two years in her job as a project coordinator, she saw the majority of her colleagues stay at the same level of the organization- only a small portion of them were being promoted to the next level. It welchesnt clear how she could become ne of the few selected to move to the next rung on the ladder and more responsibility? If youre looking for a path to promotion or a raise, here is the four-step plan I suggested to Morgan. If you take unterstellung steps now, youll position yourself for more by the end of this year.Step 1 Get Clear on Your Value Proposition, Inside and OutOne of the biggest mistakes I see people make is assuming that their manager knows everything they do and the impact they have on the organization. But in reality, no manager could possibly know thatTo position yourself for more, you have to understand and clearly communicate what youve accomplished, the results youve delivered, the superior qualities you bring to your work, and your ability to work effectively with others. In short, you need to figure out how you make your manager look like a rock star for hiring you. And then you need to remind him or her of it. Morgan, for example, had assisted on numerous projects, timelines, critical deliverables, and budgets. Shed navigated her first solo project and delivered her clients needs with aplomb. Shed received numerous commendations and believed she was performing above the bar relative to her goals and peers. They key, I told her, was to keep track of all of these accomplishments (try creating a brag folder), so that she had accurate records with documented, quantified results. Staying on top of your achievements helps keep you focused- and can help prove your case later, when you make the move to ask for a raise or promotion. Action StepSet aside 15 minutes on your calendar each Friday to record key updates and accomplishments youve delivered that week. Be sure to focus on results, not just a list of tasks.*Step 2 Share Your Accomplishments and Career Goal With Your ManagerStudies show that Millennials, in particular, want to be promoted quickly- sometimes without merit. In fact, one survey indicated that 40% of Gen Y employees felt they should be promoted every two years, regardless of achievements or work habits. Maybe some organizations will come to embrace this way of thinking down the road, but its certainly not the case in fruchtwein places today. For now, any raise or promotion you want will have to be earned.Keep in mind, most promotions and salary increase decisions are made far in advance of the time you actually hear about them. So if youre aiming for a move by the end of this year, have a conversation with your manager in the first quarter of the year to explain the accomplishments youve already achieved, and le t him or her know what else you intend to achieve by the end of the review period. Action StepSchedule a career planning conversation with your manager. Let him or her know you intend to be one of the high performers and want to move to the next level. Review the summary of the accomplishments you documented in step 1.* Step 3 Ask What it Will Take to Get PromotedInstead of leaving her career to happenstance, Morgan planned to ask her manager, What do I need to accomplish to be promoted from project coordinator to project associate at the end of this review period?I told her to insist on specifics What results need to be accomplished? In what timeline? What outcomes need to be delivered? How will those outcomes be measured? Until you understand- very specifically- what it takes to be selected for a promotion, you do not have enough information to take the action you need to make it happen. Action StepIn your career planning meeting with your manager, ask, What specific results and o utcomes do I need to deliver, and what specific behaviors do I need to demonstrate to be promoted to project associate at the end of this review period? Ask follow-up questions to get the specifics you need to build a plan to make that promotion happen. Leave nothing to chance*Step 4 Schedule Quarterly ReviewsOnce youve completed your career planning conversation, schedule follow-up quarterly meetings with your manager before you leave the meeting. Why? Because it will demonstrate that you are committed to making these results happen and that youre going to hold yourself accountable for coming back to your boss with regular updates on your progress. If you wait until later, itll be easy to push the meetings off or let other work issues get in the way. And if that happens, you can kiss that promotion goodbye Action StepAs you wrap up your career planning conversation, coordinate calendars with your manager for the next three quarterly conversations.* Once youve set up quarterly revie ws with your manager and done this up-front work, youre off to the races. Now, you need to deliver.During each following quarterly meeting, ask for feedback about your progress. If your manager is serious about promoting you, youll get specific points on what you can do differently and how you can adjust. If you sense that your manager is wavering, its likely you may not see that opportunity materialize, and it may be time to think about your next move. But no matter which way the road turns, youll get a huge boost of confidence and great career management experience by going through this process. And youll set yourself apart as a professional whos on the way up.

5 Tips to Capture a Recruiters Attention

5 Tips to Capture a Recruiters Attention5 Tips to Capture a Recruiters AttentionIn a stack of resumes, its hard to stand out from the crowd, which should be a goal of every job seeker. To capture a recruiters attention, job seekers need to offer up more than what the typical candidates are delivering. So, if you want to make an impression on a recruiter and stand out from the competition, consider the tips below to make yourself shine.Check out these five ways you can capture a recruiters attention and get on their good side1. Brand yourself- but dont over do it.Having a personal brand you can sell to recruiters and hiring managers is important. However, you dont want to be overbearing in your delivery. Use your brand as a support resource, not a loud pitch that will send people running in the opposite direction.2. Be mindful of your wording in follow-up emails.Recruiters are busy and often have hundreds of candidates they are managing. Although a lack of communication can be frustra ting, dont be short or snarky in your follow-up. Give it about five business days and then reach out with a gentle reminder of who you are and your eagerness to talk to them again. And dont forget to say thank you3. Offer your help to find good candidates.Sourcing and hiring good candidates takes a lot of work, especially when you are trying to find the right fit. If you arent exactly what they are looking for, offer up some help by tapping into your network. While it might seem unproductive at the moment, in the long run, your good deed can give you access to the recruiters network. And, who do you think they have as connections? More recruiters4. Have information to back up your claims.Telling a recruiter about how great you are isnt going to do you any good if you dont have the documentation to back up your claims. Have your references compiled, provide a solid portfolio, and give them access to where they can find other work samples. Providing them with this information makes it easier for them to validate your claims and move you ahead of the pile.5. Include your personal quirks.Setting yourself apart from the competition and making an impression can be as simple as sharing a few of your personal and professional quirks. Use your cover letter to share some of these quirks and relate them to the role you are applying. If these quirks come in the form of skills or experience, add them to your resume. A recruiter is likely to remember you if you have interesting quirks about you, such as being a skydiving instructor or doing woodworking on the side.If you want to capture a recruiters attention you, need to stand out. But be sure to do so in a way that makes you unique, not overbearing. You want to be remembered for your positive attitude, not for being annoying or curt.Readers, what do you do to capture a recruiters attention? Have you had success with anything in particular? So you didnt make it into university

So you didnt make it into university So you didnt make it into universityPosted October 24, 2013, by Andrea RiddellPerhaps you walked out of your last exam with the gut feeling that you didnt do so well. Or you wish you spent more time studying biology than playing video games. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but it cant help you if you failed to get the HSC result you needed. Luckily there is more than one way to your dream career than the university route.Yes, you might have to put in the extra hard yards, but if theres a will, theres a wayStudying at TAFEGenerally, selection for TAFE is notlage based on your TER or ATAR you just need to have completed your Year 12 or Year 10 certificate. The relaxed entry requirements dont reduce the value of your TAFE qualification. In fact, in many cases, a TAFE course will be more than enough to kick-start your career.Traditionally, TAFE courses focus on practical learning for the workplace. Universities, on the other hand, spend more time on theories and building frameworks for analysis and problem-solving. Industries such as hospitality and floristry, and more skills-based fields such as textiles, hairdressing, automotives and construction, are dominated by TAFE-qualified workers.Think about where you see yourself. Are you a hands-on person? Perhaps TAFE is the better option for you. Many universities will accept a TAFE qualification as an entry pathway into their degrees and in some instances, you may even be able to gain credit for prior learning, reducing the length of your course. These partnership agreements between TAFEs and universities make it easier for anyone wanting to continue their education from a VET course to a degree.Taking on single unitsSome universities, such as Deakin, Monash and Swinburne, offer single units for study. This means that youll be able to study individual course subjects and ease your way into a course.Studying at a unit level will give you a taste for the course and help you decide i f its what you really want to do. This pathway doesnt guarantee you entry into a course, but a strong performance can help your application. And, you may even receive credit for the subjects that you successfully complete.Be aware that single subjects are considered non-award study. This means that theyre not recognised and do not lead to or count towards a formal award. Often, theyre not covered through FEE-HELP or HECS-HELP, meaning you will have to pay the course fee upfront. The online advantageOnline study can be a great alternative for anyone looking for university alternatives. Many universities, TAFEs and other private institutions offer a range of courses online everything from certificates to masters degrees.Open Universities Australia offers a range of TAFE qualifications and university degrees online from many of Australias leading tertiary education providers. This means that you can study with a university from a different state without leaving your living room. Youll have the flexibility to find a university that meets your entry requirements without the added stress of finding a location that also suits.Studying a TAFE qualification or even the beginning of a university degree may give you enough experience to transfer to the university of your choice with credit for prior learning.Or, if you decide to continue on with your online study, online qualifications have the saatkorn value as their on-campus equivalent, meaning youll end up with the same qualification as if you studied on campus.Same degree, different universityConsider studying the degree youre passionate about at a university with a lower ATAR or TER entry requirement. This way you can still get started with no detours.A lower entry score doesnt denote a lower quality degree or university. Often its a result of the course demand over the years, which can be based on reputation, location and availability. Some universities might have a lower entry score to counterbalance other entry requirements such as comprehensive applications, portfolios and interviews. If your heart is still set on studying at a particular university, you can apply for a transfer after your first year. While this wont guarantee your spot, maintaining good results will help you get your foot in the door. The online advantageOnline study can be a great alternative for anyone looking for university alternatives. Reese Witherspoons honest parenting technique is essential for success

Reese Witzu sichspoons honest parenting technique is essential for successReese Witherspoons honest parenting technique is essential for successA recent feature in Fast Company, titled A day in the life of Reese Witherspoon, offers some insight not only into the actress andentrepreneursdaily routine, but also into her feelings on brutal honesty.Heres Witherspoon, as told to Mary Kaye Schilling I feel like Im constantly counteracting pressure from the parents who want to make the lives of their kids golden and magical at all moments Guess what, kids? Youre going to be disappointed and uncomfortable once in a while.Witherspoon shares a partal example of how she took the faux gold and magic out of parentingI remember Ava her daughter, now 19 years old crying in bed in third grade - she was on JV basketball and she was the only kid on the team who didnt score. I said, Aves, maybe yourebadat basketball. She thought that was mean. I said, Mean or true? Cause, guess what? Your moms bad at basketball, too. super honesty seems to be the MO in Witherspoons marriage as well. Witherspoon told Fast Company I quit driving a year ago. My husband Jim Toth said, Babe, youre a terrible driver. Get someone to do that for you. And its great because thats the time I now spend catching up on phone calls or texts.Witherspoon isnt the only parent whos talked up the benefits of being candid with their kids. OnParenting.com, Janelle Hanchett, author of Im Just Happy to Be Here A Memoir of Renegade Mothering, writes that she told her daughter (coincidentally, also named Ava) she wasnt good at sports.Hanchett remembers explaining to Ava, Youre in 5th grade and read Charles Dickens. That aint normal. But youve done it without even trying. But all of us also have things that we are NOT naturally good at. If we want to get good at those things, we absolutely can, but we have to put in twice the effort of the people around us to get to the decent point and even harder if we want to excel.Ap parently, Ava got the drift.Be honest with yourself about your strengths and weaknessesEven if youre not brutally honest with others about their shortcomings, being honest with yourself is important. In anotherFast Company article, Mike Templeman, founder of Foxtail Marketing, writes that you shouldnt be bogged down by your weaknesses that have no bearing on you becoming a huge success.By contrast, if there are weaknesses that will affect your ability to become successful, work on them To borrow from Templemans example, if youre a charismatic person with great ideas, you might want to pursue public speaking. And if youve got a habit of using filler words, thats something you should probably fix.Sometimes, being aware of your weaknesses can help you capitalize on them, instead of ignore them. (Ill refer you to the idea of thefixed versus growth mindset.)In his book Barking Up the Wrong Tree, Eric Barker wrote that some of the worlds most successful people have achieved fame and glory because of - not in spite of - their eccentricities. For example, Michael Phelps has an unusual body type, which makes him an outstanding swimmer, but probably not a great runner. As Hanchett writes on Parenting.com, its important to let your kids know they arent the best at everything. Wouldnt she Hanchetts daughter also think the world should be working for her? Theres a word for that. Its called entitled. This article was originally published on geschftlicher umgang Insider.
